Don't Wait Until All the Traffic Lights Turn Green
Why waiting for perfection is a trap. A reflection on the 'Analyst vs. Builder' mindset and the power of starting before you feel ready.
There is a quote I love: “If you want to go somewhere, don’t wait until all the traffic lights turn green.”
If I wait for a perfect string of green lights before I leave my driveway, I will never leave the house. When I start driving, I will handle the red lights when I reach them, and trust that I’ll figure out the route along the way.
The Analyst vs. The Builder
I know some very intelligent people whose superpower is seeing the whole picture, identifying risks, and planning the perfect execution. But sometimes, they are too smart to make a move, because they see all the factors that could lead to failure.
I am different. I lean on intuition.
When I wanted to build Rooby Studio, I didn’t have a Figma design. I didn’t have a content calendar. I didn’t know how I was going to pipe MIDI data from a browser into Logic Pro (yet).
But I knew I wanted to build it. So I just clicked the button.
Think Big, Start Small, Move Fast
This blog is a living example of that philosophy.
- Week 1: It was a generic theme.
- Week 2: It had a decent look and feel, and I put a few blogs in it.
- Week 3: It had a serverless backend for interaction (the like feature).
If I had tried to design the “Perfect Audio-Reactive Blog” on paper first, I would have been paralyzed by the complexity. By building the skateboard before the car, I created momentum.
The Takeaway
Planning is essential, but it can also be a trap. It feels like work, but it produces no output.
If you have an idea—a song, a feature, a blog—don’t wait for the green lights. Just put the car in Drive. You can fix the navigation later.
